Divine Simplicity

"O LORD, you will ordain peace for us, for you have indeed done for us all our works."
   ~Isaiah 26:12

Because the Unreachable has Himself reached out, and the Unknowable has made Himself known, and the Creator has clothed Himself in creation, for, "the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). And in that glory, we have seen,

The Transcendent
Is the Immanent
The Greatness
Is the Goodness
The Majesty
Is the Humility
The Authority
Is the Submission
The Holiness
Is the Sacrifice
The Fire
Is the Water
The Truth
Is the Wisdom
The Exalted
Is the Condescension
The Justice
Is the Mercy
The Wrath
Is the Love
that cannot be found
that cannot be escaped.
that deserves gifts
that gives.
that requires service
that serves.
that commands
that obeys.
that demands sanctity
that sanctifies.
that destroys the unclean
that washes perfectly.
that must be understood
that understands.
that cannot be reached
that raises up.
that requires payment
that pays.
that condemns
Who saves.

-- And There Is No Division

For, "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one" (Deuteronomy 6:4), and, although He is Three Persons in One God, He is never divided into parts, and there is no war within Him. Hallelujah, and Amen!

  1. Awesome, brother! This moves my heart to praise our great God, there is no one like YHWH! I love what you've done with words here. And how beautiful and true it is that the harmonizing of what seems to be dissonance yields insight.....this has to be very close to the heart of the Triune God since He has definitively revealed Himself in the resurrection-harmonized dissonance of the cross.

    1. Thanks, Chris! I'm glad you found it helpful and moving, and I appreciate the encouragement. Ever since others opened my eyes to this sort of thinking/understanding/vision, I have found it an endlessly beautiful and beneficial topic to meditate on and glorify God for.

One of the things I love about it (and which is somewhat hidden -- though present -- in the poem but revealed by the Scripture verse above it from Isaiah) is that since it is true in an ultimate way about God in Himself, in His Triune nature and fellowship, it is also true in an "economic" way, in the way that God interacts with us, most clearly and obviously in the Person and work of Jesus. All of those things which are required of us in order to know and please God (and which, of course, we are incapable of doing on our own), God Himself has done for us as a man, on our behalf and as an example, in Jesus. And even further, those things which the Son did on our behalf as a man, the Holy Spirit now empowers us to do from within us, in participation with Jesus. And thus are we conformed by the Spirit to the life of the Son, which is perfectly beloved by the Father -- or, said another way, the Spirit unites us to the Son, in whom we are united to the Father -- so that we are brought by the Triune God into the very life and fellowship of that same Triune God, which is life and peace and joy eternal, and thus are we saved.

So the poem may be read simultaneously as:
      1) A meditation on God Himself, in His Triune life and complete, unchanging all-sufficiency -- as thoughts on the great "I AM,"

      2) A meditation on how God the Son, in His life on earth as Jesus, brought God to us and did for us all those things required by God the Father, and

      3) A meditation on how the Most High God now reaches down to and dwells with and in His people in the Person of the Holy Spirit, producing in us and empowering us for those things which He requires -- God Himself uniting us to Himself and making us capable of and joyous in that union.

God bless and keep you and yours, always.

      In Christ,
      ~Sean
